Violin and viola tuition

Andrew has more than 25 years’ experience in teaching and loves sharing the path of discovery with his students. He teaches privately from his Brunswick East studio in inner northern Melbourne, taking violin and viola students from 8 years to 80+ years. Adult students, including beginnners, are particularly encouraged for these rewarding instruments.

In 30 years of professional playing, he has had the opportunity to observe, discuss and codify his thoughts on the various ways eminent artists achieve their expressive goals. Andrew draws on this experience to encourage physical awareness in his violin and viola students. This pragmatic approach allows his students to achieve great sound production with minimal effort and maximum efficiency through thoughtful reflection. He makes a point of explaining not only “how” things work but also “why” they work to ensure ease and enjoyment of playing. From the beginning, students should experience a great degree of freedom, flexibility and facility.

His teaching draws on a variety of established methods tailored to the individual needs of the student. Andrew works with students on a variety of performance styles with the aim of achieving the best result. After establishing a solid fundamental technique, students are able to approach and adapt to a variety of performance styles according their interests.

For those considering more formal preparation in music performance, he draws heavily on the AMEB syllabus as a framework from which students can work in a structured manner. His experience as an AMEB examiner in Tasmania allows him to share insights for exam preparation for those seeking formal assessment.

Please contact Andrew if you are interested in commencing (or restarting) playing the violin or viola.
