Viola making

Andrew commenced an apprenticeship in violinmaking in 2011 in Melbourne. Since that time, he has completed five violas — three based on a 1785 Guadagnini pattern, one based on noted Australian maker A E Smith’s 1947 Brescian pattern and one based on a small-scale crica 1580 Gasparo da Salo pattern. His first instrument, one of the 1785 Guadagnini pattern violas, was exhibited at the 2012 Australian Violin Makers Association Conference, receiving favourable comments from Australian and international attendees.

Andrew’s approach to making has benefited greatly from discussions with and advice from other Australian and New Zealand luthiers, including Paul Davies, Philip Smith, John Ferwerda, Arthur Robinson and Tobias Widemann.

Please contact Andrew if you are interested in commissioning a new viola or to trial finished instruments available for purchase.
